Ministry of Environment send divers to search for damages to the coral reefs by “Claudia Gas” that ran aground near Sharm El-Sheikh

EgyptDailyNews - A source at the South Sinai Governorate confirmed that the Ministry of Environment formed a team of divers to dive to the area of the stranded ship "Claudia Gas" on the coral reefs in the "Ras Nasrani" area at Ras Jamila near the Shark House in Sharm El-Sheikh, to determine the damage that occurred to the coral reefs, in preparation for an assessment for the amount of fine on the ship, according to international law, which is set to reach tens of millions of dollars.

The source explained that the ship was seized after it successfully sailed from Al Shutah towards the Sharm El Sheikh seaport, and the incident is being investigated. He confirmed that the initial investigations conducted by the Sharm El-Sheikh Prosecution Office into the stranding incident indicated that the cause of the stranding was a sudden malfunction that caused the ship to drift towards the dense coral reefs in Nasrani Bay.

The ship raising the Liberian flag was carrying gas, and its cargo was unloaded in the Jordanian port of Aqaba and was returning to Russia.

Several quick measures towards the ship were taken by the authorities, including a state of preparedness for an environmental emergency, in anticipation of any leaks or pollution of the marine environment in the area
