Egypt Daily News – A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Libya, where a boat carrying 13 Egyptian migrants capsized, resulting in the deaths of all but one individual on board.
This took place approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Tobruk on Monday evening, as reported by local authorities and the humanitarian group Al-Abreen, which aids migrants in Libya. They confirmed that the sole survivor was rescued, and the bodies of the deceased were recovered and brought to shore.
Libya has become a significant departure point for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty across Africa and the Middle East. Recent statistics reveal an alarming trend: in 2024, there have already been 531 reported migrant deaths and 754 individuals missing on the Central Mediterranean route.
The situation has escalated in recent years, with human traffickers exploiting the instability in Libya, particularly following the overthrow of leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.
Last month, another incident involved a boat carrying 32 migrants that capsized due to engine failure, leading to one confirmed death and 22 individuals still unaccounted for.
These perilous journeys underline the ongoing crisis of migration in the region, as many continue to risk their lives seeking a better future.
