Egypt Daily News – On Monday, the Bangladesh Army announced the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, urging citizens to stop violence and place their trust in the military. Army Commander Waqar Zaman confirmed that discussions were underway to establish a transitional government following the Prime Minister’s flight from the country.

Sheikh Hasina departed the capital, Dhaka, amid widespread protests demanding her resignation. A source close to the Prime Minister indicated that she and her sister sought refuge in a safer location and had intended to record a speech but did not have the opportunity.

Reports from local media suggest that Hasina left the country via military helicopter, heading toward India. Her escape came as thousands of protesters stormed her residence in Dhaka.

The confrontations during the ongoing anti-government protests have led to a significant toll, with at least 300 people reported dead, including 94 on Sunday alone—a record high in the ongoing unrest. Hasina, 76, has been in power since 2009 and recently secured her fourth term in a January election largely boycotted by opposition parties.

The protests began last month when students demanded the repeal of a controversial quota system for government jobs, and they escalated into a broader movement calling for Hasina’s ouster.
