Egypt Daily News – West Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya said last night that it was concerned about reports of the mobilization of forces in Tripoli and threats to use force to resolve the crisis of control over the country’s central bank.
The Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs and Acting Head of Mission, Stephanie Khoury, informed the Security Council last Monday that the political and military situation in Libya has deteriorated rapidly over the past two months, including a series of mobilization operations conducted by armed factions.
The mission said in its statement yesterday, Thursday, “The display of military force and armed confrontations in densely populated neighborhoods is unacceptable and threatens the lives and security of civilians.”
The latest tensions escalated after efforts by political bodies to oust the Governor of the Central Bank, Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir, and mobilizations by rival armed factions.
The main battles stopped with a ceasefire in 2020, but efforts to end the political crisis failed, allowing the continuation of the main factions, which sometimes engage in armed clashes and compete for control of Libya’s large economic resources.
