Egypt DailyNews – The recent presidential elections in Algeria resulted in a decisive victory for incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who garnered over five million votes, significantly surpassing his nearest rival, Sharif Hassani, who received approximately 179,000 votes, and Youssef Ouchich, with around 122,000 votes. These preliminary results indicate that Tebboune will enter a second five-year term.
Following the announcement of these results by the National Election Authority, spearheaded by Mohamed Charfi, the final results will be submitted to the Constitutional Court. This move will allow for any potential appeals and pave the way for official ratification.
The election featured three candidates, with Tebboune, who took office in December 2019, competing against Hassani, the leader of the Islamic Society for Peace Movement and an engineer, and Ouchich, a former journalist and leader of the Socialist Forces Front, which is notable as Algeria’s oldest opposition party.
Mohamed Sharafi, the head of the National Election Authority, emphasized that the election process was conducted fairly, aiming for transparency and protecting voters’ rights. He highlighted the importance of impartiality in fostering a respectful environment among candidates and between the authority and the candidates, which ultimately contributed to the organization of the electoral process.
Sharafi expressed satisfaction with the high level of citizen participation, interpreting this as a sign of the public’s commitment to a transparent and free electoral process, reinforcing the idea that all segments of the Algerian population are engaged in the democratic process.
