Egypt Daily News – President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met today with Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, to discuss the critical political and humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Their discussions centered around efforts to achieve a ceasefire, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Egypt and the EU.
Spokesperson for the presidency noted that the majority of their meeting was given to review Egypt’s efforts and cooperation to facilitate a ceasefire, the exchange of hostages and detainees, and to address the humanitarian disaster affecting Gaza’s population.
Following the meeting, Borrell visited the Rafah border crossing with Gaza and met with representatives from international relief agencies. In a press conference at the crossing, he emphasized the EU’s commitment to providing ongoing humanitarian support for Palestinians and reiterated calls for a ceasefire. Borrell expressed appreciation for Egypt’s efforts in coordinating aid delivery and stressed that European institutions are doing everything possible to assist Gaza’s residents.
He also described the Gaza crisis as a “man-made crisis,” underscoring the urgent need for a political resolution while criticizing Israel for hindering the flow of humanitarian aid into the area. He also mentioned his proposal for the EU to impose sanctions on Israeli ministers for their inflammatory rhetoric.
Borrell is set to visit Lebanon later this week amid growing concerns about the potential escalation of conflict with Israel and its neighboring countries.
