Condemnations and international outrage after Israel targeted “UNIFIL” forces in Lebanon

Egypt Daily News – A wave of international anger and sharp condemnations were directed at Israel after it targeted the United Nations peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

That incident, which shook diplomatic circles, came at a sensitive time when Lebanon is witnessing escalating tensions, prompting many countries to consider this attack a “serious violation” of international treaties.

The sudden attack on the UN soldiers, who are working to maintain stability in the tense region, has opened the floodgates to a wave of official condemnations from various countries and international organizations.

While many observers considered this attack a “serious challenge” to international efforts to maintain security and peace in Lebanon, it puts the future of the UNIFIL mission under direct threat.

Angry reactions continued to call for an immediate investigation and accountability for those responsible for this escalation.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, condemned Israel’s targeting of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, considering the firing on UNIFIL “unacceptable,” and emphasized that the attack on an international peacekeeping mission is irresponsible.

For his part, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for an end to all forms of violence against the United Nations force deployed in southern Lebanon, pointing out that what happened at the UNIFIL headquarters in Lebanon is completely unacceptable.

And on her part .. A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed shock regarding reports that Israel targeted the United Nations peacekeeping force deployed in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Confirming that it is essential to protect peacekeeping forces and civilians.

As for French President Emmanuel Macron, he considered that the deliberate targeting of UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon by Israeli forces is “absolutely unacceptable,” stressing that France will not accept firing on UN soldiers again.

In the same context, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it summoned the Israeli ambassador in Paris after the targeting of UNIFIL forces.Pointing out that these attacks constitute serious violations of international law and should stop immediately,” adding that the Israeli authorities should provide an explanation for that.

While the Israeli occupation army limited itself to justifying the incident by stating that it fired at a “threat” near a UN forces site, which resulted in the injury of two peacekeeping soldiers.

With the increasing pressure to conduct urgent investigations into the incident, the need to take decisive steps to ensure that such assaults do not happen again seems urgent.
