Egypt Daily News – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed claimed that Addis Ababa seeks a peaceful access to the Red Sea, asserting that his country’s approach is based on avoiding conflict with neighboring countries.

This came during his response to inquiries from members of parliament today, Thursday, regarding a range of local, regional, and international issues.

Ethiopian media reported Ahmed as saying, “Ethiopia is focused on promoting peace, accelerating development, prioritizing regional cooperation, and attracting foreign investment.”

He claimed that his country “did not encroach on Somali territory,” after signing a memorandum of understanding with the separatist Somaliland region to lease an area of the Red Sea for 50 years.

He pointed out that “Ethiopia is home to the largest Somali community outside Mogadishu,” adding, “We have made significant sacrifices, including the loss of thousands, to help maintain peace in Somalia,” according to his claims.

He claimed that “Ethiopia aims to cooperate with all countries based on the principle of giving and mutual benefit,” asserting that “his country is committed to the development of the continent beyond its own interests.”

He added, “Ethiopia does not want to pose a threat to any country, but will continue to enhance its role in addressing continental issues and strengthening its relations with countries around the world,” according to his statement.
