Egypt Daily News – Netanyahu described Assad’s departure as a “historic day in the history of the Middle East,” warning of the presence of important risks, in his opinion, and expressing his hope to open a new page with Syria.

He said: “If we can establish good and peaceful neighborhood relations with the new, rising forces in Syria, that is our hope.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday morning that the Israeli army took control of the buffer zone in the occupied Syrian Golan, which was established under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement following the October War of 1973.

Netanyahu was speaking from a place close to the border between Syria and the occupied Syrian Golan, which Israel annexed to its territory. This announcement came after the opposition armed groups took control of most Syrian cities and entered the capital, Damascus, thus announcing the end of the rule of Bashar al-Assad, who left the country to an unknown location until now.

The Israeli Prime Minister said that the 50-decade-old agreement had collapsed and that the Syrian army had left its positions, which, in his opinion, necessitated Israeli control of the place. He added that this measure is temporary until an appropriate agreement is reached, as he put it.

Commenting on Assad’s departure, Netanyahu described the event as a “historic day in the history of the Middle East,” warning of the presence of important risks, in his opinion, and expressing his hope to open a new page with Syria.

In this regard, he said: “If we are able to establish good and peaceful neighborhood relations with the new emerging forces in Syria, then that is our hope, but if we are not able we will do everything necessary to defend the state and borders of Israel,” he said.
