Egypt Daily News – In an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, Russia used its veto power against a proposed amendment by European countries to the U.S. draft resolution on the Ukrainian crisis.
The European amendment aimed to include provisions emphasizing Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as imposing stricter sanctions on Moscow.
The session witnessed intense discussions among the permanent members of the Security Council. The United States expressed its readiness to use its veto against any amendments, whether Russian or European, to its original draft resolution. A U.S. State Department official told reporters, “We will veto the Russian amendment if it is presented at the Security Council, and we will veto the European amendments if they are proposed.”
While the United States insisted on maintaining its original draft resolution, arguing that the proposed amendments could hinder diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, European countries expressed disappointment over Russia’s use of the veto, emphasizing the need for a firm stance in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Russia justified its veto by claiming that the European amendments were biased and targeted its national interests, stressing the importance of adopting a balanced approach to addressing the crisis.
Russia’s veto is expected to complicate international efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and further escalate tensions between Moscow and Western countries. It could also impact future diplomatic initiatives within the Security Council regarding the Ukrainian crisis.
In an unprecedented move, however, Washington welcomed the Security Council’s adoption of a resolution calling for an end to the conflict in Ukraine and the achievement of lasting peace. The resolution, backed by the U.S. and unexpectedly supported by Russia and China, was hailed by Washington as “historic,” marking a significant shift in international efforts to end the war and promote stability in the region.
