Egypt Daily News – The United States in a recent meeting of the United Nations Security Council emphasized the need for Israel to urgently address the severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. U.S.
Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, highlighted the “catastrophic conditions” faced by Palestinian civilians and urged Israel to take immediate measures to alleviate the suffering exacerbated by restrictions on aid delivery.
Thomas-Greenfield pointed out that the dire conditions in Gaza had been anticipated for months without sufficient action taken to mitigate them, stressing that it was imperative for Israel to respond to the urgent needs of the population.
The context of the Security Council’s discussion surrounds the ongoing humanitarian crisis stemming from the war that followed a significant attack by Hamas on southern Israel.
This conflict has resulted in substantial destruction within Gaza and massive displacement among its 2.3 million residents.
Notably, there are stark disparities in casualty figures, with Israel reporting around 1,200 fatalities from the initial Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, while health authorities in Gaza claim that approximately 42,000 people have died due to the Israeli military response since then.
The international community appears increasingly concerned about the humanitarian implications of the conflict and is calling for steps to ensure aid reaches those in desperate need in Gaza.
