Egypt Daily News – The United States has announced a significant military deployment to the Middle East in response to rising tensions following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, in Tehran. As part of this move, the aircraft carrier “Abraham Lincoln” is being sent to the region to replace the “Theodore Roosevelt,” which is currently operating in the Gulf of Oman. This deployment is aimed at bolstering U.S. military presence amidst concerns of potential Iranian retaliation.
Additionally, the U.S. will send destroyers and cruisers equipped to counter ballistic missiles, although specific details regarding the ships involved have not been disclosed. The deployment will also include a fighter squadron, enhancing the air capabilities in the region. Currently, the amphibious assault ship WASP is present and is prepared to assist in evacuating American citizens from Lebanon if necessary.
Iran has publicly vowed to retaliate against Israel for the killing of Haniyeh, but Israel has not commented on the incident. U.S. officials have indicated that they are closely monitoring the situation, warning that an Iranian attack could occur in the coming days and might resemble previous strikes carried out in April, but potentially more extensive and coordinated with Iranian proxies. This strategic movement by the U.S. underscores the heightened tensions in the region and the potential for escalated conflict.
