Federal authorities are investigating what appears to be a potential assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump, after a suspicious, elevated hunting stand was discovered in a tree with a direct line of sight to the designated disembarkation area for Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport.

The discovery was made on Thursday morning, just hours before the former president was scheduled to arrive at the airport aboard the presidential aircraft. The Secret Service and the FBI have launched a joint investigation into the incident, which they have described as highly concerning and indicative of possible premeditated planning.

Elevated Platform Sparks Fears of Sniper Threat

According to senior law enforcement officials who spoke to Fox News Digital, the suspicious structure — described as a “professionally built” hunting stand was found nestled in a tree located within visible range of where President Trump routinely exits Air Force One. The platform was elevated and camouflaged, suggesting it could have been used to surveil or even potentially target the president during his arrival.

No individuals were found at or near the site at the time of the discovery. However, due to the proximity, vantage point, and suspicious nature of the platform, law enforcement officials did not rule out the possibility that it was intended for an assassination attempt or other hostile act.

A federal official confirmed to reporters that the platform’s height and orientation offered an unobstructed view of the airfield area where the president’s motorcade typically begins its route a vulnerability that triggered an immediate security alert.

“Prepared Months in Advance”

Early forensic analysis indicates the structure was likely built weeks or even months ago. Investigators believe the platform was erected well in advance of the former president’s arrival, potentially by individuals familiar with the airport’s layout and his travel schedule.

“This wasn’t something someone threw together overnight,” a federal law enforcement source said on background. “The materials, elevation, and positioning all point to advanced preparation and possibly a high degree of planning.”

Authorities are now analyzing nearby surveillance footage, monitoring cell phone tower data from the area, and canvassing for witnesses who may have seen any suspicious activity around the site in recent weeks.

FBI Takes the Lead in Ongoing Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over the criminal investigation, working in close coordination with the U.S. Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. In a statement, FBI spokesperson Kash Patel said the agency is treating the incident with “the utmost seriousness.”

“Our agents have collected physical evidence from the site, and our digital forensics teams are analyzing communications and data traffic from the area,” said Patel. “We’re pursuing all leads and working closely with our partners in the Secret Service.”

Patel emphasized that, as of now, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made. The FBI has not yet disclosed whether any weapons or surveillance equipment were found at the site.

Secret Service Tightens Security Protocols

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications, confirmed in a separate statement that the agency had significantly enhanced its protective measures for the president following the discovery.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we have reinforced security protocols surrounding all presidential movements in and out of Palm Beach,” said Guglielmi. “We are also conducting a full review of vulnerability points across all scheduled events.”

While details remain tightly guarded due to national security concerns, sources confirm that additional surveillance, aerial patrols, and perimeter sweeps have been implemented at multiple locations the president frequents.

Trump Unaware at Time of Arrival

Sources close to the Trump team say the former president was not informed of the potential threat until after the incident had been secured. He was escorted safely from the airfield to his Mar-a-Lago residence under routine Secret Service protection, and no disruptions occurred during his transit.

As of Sunday, former President Trump has made no public comment on the incident. His spokesperson declined to answer specific questions, saying only that “President Trump is grateful for the work of law enforcement and remains focused on his schedule.”

The incident comes at a time of elevated political tension, as the former president continues a series of public appearances and rallies ahead of the 2026 midterms. Trump remains a polarizing figure in American politics, and concerns over his safety have been previously raised by security analysts and political allies alike.

Political Ramifications and Security Debate

The apparent breach has reignited a long-standing debate over security at civilian airports and public events involving high-profile political figures.

“This should be a wake-up call,” said John Cohen, a former counterterrorism official at the Department of Homeland Security. “Presidents current or former face real threats, and we have to treat unconventional platforms like hunting stands or construction scaffolding as potential risks.”

Cohen added that advanced planning by malicious actors is often difficult to detect. “We’ve seen in the past that lone actors or small cells may exploit simple structures to stage attacks or gather intelligence. This kind of platform, if weaponized, could have catastrophic consequences.”

History of Threats and Past Incidents

While rare, threats against U.S. presidents including assassination plots have surfaced periodically throughout history. In 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalists attempted to assassinate President Harry S. Truman in Washington, D.C. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. outside the Washington Hilton.

More recently, the Secret Service has had to respond to numerous threats against both sitting and former presidents, with new digital tools and unconventional tactics complicating threat detection.

The Palm Beach incident also echoes concerns raised in 2023, when local law enforcement found an unregistered drone attempting to surveil the grounds of Mar-a-Lago. That incident resulted in new aerial surveillance restrictions, but critics have argued that ground-level threats remain insufficiently monitored.

Investigation Ongoing

Federal authorities have not disclosed a timeline for the completion of their investigation but have urged members of the public to report any information that may help identify the individuals responsible for erecting the platform.

“We’re treating this seriously because we can’t afford not to,” said one federal agent involved in the investigation. “Even if this turns out to be unrelated to any assassination attempt, it exposed a vulnerability that must be addressed.”

For now, the platform has been dismantled, and the area around Palm Beach International Airport remains under heightened security. Investigators are expected to release a public update in the coming days as evidence is reviewed.
