Egypt Daily News – US President Joe Biden addressed the recent killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, expressing his belief that it would hinder efforts towards establishing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Biden voiced his “deep concern” over the rising tensions in the Middle East and urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to swiftly pursue a ceasefire agreement.
During a phone call with Netanyahu, Biden emphasized the importance of supporting Israel in defending against Iranian threats, discussing potential new American military deployments in the region.
The assassination of Haniyeh has raised alarms of possible retaliation against Israel and concerns that the conflict in Gaza may escalate into a wider regional war. While Hamas and Iran accused Israel of orchestrating the killing, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
