First official reaction
On Tuesday, the United States officially congratulated the Canadian Prime Minister on the Liberal Party’s election win, following a campaign largely shaped by rejection of President Trump’s threats.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in the first official response: “The United States congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and his party on their victory in Canada’s recent federal elections.”
Liberal Prime Minister Carney won the legislative elections in Canada, promising to defeat the United States in the ongoing trade war initiated by Donald Trump and vowing not to forget what he called the American “betrayal.”
Coinciding with Monday’s election, President Trump reiterated his hope that Canada would one day become the 51st U.S. state.
The State Department spokesperson added, “The relationship between the United States and Canada remains one of the most extensive in the world. We look forward to working with Prime Minister Carney’s government” on major issues such as “fair trade, combating irregular migration, stopping the smuggling of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs, and curbing the influence of the Chinese Communist Party on our continent.”
