A key United States military surveillance aircraft has been destroyed in a missile strike on a major air base in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation involving Iran and US forces in the region. The attack also left multiple American service members wounded, several of them seriously.
Satellite imagery and photographs from Prince Sultan Air Base reveal extensive damage to an E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft, a platform considered vital for tracking drones, missiles, and aircraft across vast distances. The jet, operated by the US Air Force, plays a central role in battlefield awareness and command coordination.
Military analysts say the loss is particularly significant due to the limited number of such aircraft. The United States maintains a small fleet of E-3 Sentry planes, with production having ended decades ago. The destroyed aircraft was reportedly assigned to the 552nd Air Control Wing based at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, making its loss a notable blow to operational capabilities.
According to defense experts, the E-3 system functions as a critical “eye in the sky,” enabling commanders to monitor threats in real time. Its destruction is expected to temporarily reduce the US military’s ability to maintain comprehensive situational awareness in the Gulf region, where aerial threats including drones and ballistic missiles have become increasingly prevalent.

The strike formed part of a broader assault targeting Prince Sultan Air Base, located near Riyadh and used by both Saudi and US forces. Officials said the attack involved a combination of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial systems, reflecting the evolving tactics seen throughout the conflict.
At least a dozen US service members were injured in the latest strike, with several reported to be in serious condition. The incident adds to a growing toll of casualties among American forces since the conflict began, with hundreds wounded and multiple fatalities reported over recent weeks.
The base itself has come under repeated attack, underscoring its strategic importance and vulnerability. Earlier incidents this week also resulted in injuries and damage to military assets, highlighting the sustained pressure faced by US forces stationed in the region.

In response to the escalating situation, the United States has significantly increased its military presence across the Middle East. Tens of thousands of troops have been deployed alongside naval strike groups and amphibious units, including the USS Tripoli and USS Boxer, as part of a broader effort to reinforce deterrence and protect strategic interests.
The conflict has expanded beyond direct military exchanges, with implications for global energy markets. Iran’s position along the Strait of Hormuz a critical chokepoint for oil shipments, has amplified concerns over supply disruptions, contributing to volatility in fuel prices and international markets.
US President Donald Trump has called on Iran to ensure the continued flow of maritime traffic through the strait, warning of consequences if disruptions persist. Diplomatic efforts remain uncertain, with tensions showing little sign of immediate de-escalation.
Analysts say the destruction of such a high-value aircraft underscores the increasing intensity of the conflict and the growing risks to advanced military assets. As both sides continue to exchange strikes, the possibility of further escalation remains a major concern for regional and global stability.
