Egypt Daily News – Ukrainian authorities announced on Sunday that more than thirty people were killed following a Russian ballistic missile strike on the center of Sumy, a city in northeastern Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the attack, saying, “There are dozens of dead and injured civilians,” and added, “This happened on a day when people were going to church — Palm Sunday… only scoundrels do such things.”

Ukraine’s Emergency Service posted on social media that the Russian ballistic missile strike on central Sumy left at least 31 people dead and 84 others injured.

“Russia struck the city center with ballistic missiles at a time when a large number of people were on the streets,” the service said, noting that “according to initial data, 31 people were killed and at least 84 others were injured.”

President Zelensky echoed these figures, calling it a “horrific” attack. He wrote on social media: “A horrific Russian ballistic missile strike on Sumy… According to preliminary data, there are dozens of dead and injured civilians.” He emphasized that the attack occurred on Palm Sunday, saying, “Only villains do such things.”

Kyiv had been warning for weeks that Moscow might launch an attack on Sumy. Last month, Russia claimed to have taken control of a village in the Sumy region for the first time since the early days of the invasion in 2022.
