Egypt has achieved a historic transformation in public safety and security, climbing dramatically in international crime and safety rankings over the past ten years, according to data released by the Cabinet’s media center. The country has moved from being among those with the highest crime rates to joining the ranks of the world’s safest nations.

A video published by the Cabinet’s media center, titled “Egypt Transforms from Highest Crime Rates to One of the Safest Countries in 10 Years,” highlighted the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen law enforcement, enhance social stability, and reduce criminal activity across the nation. These efforts have been reflected in international reports, including those published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

Significant Improvement in Violent Crime Index

According to the IEP’s violent crime index, Egypt advanced an impressive 93 places over the decade, moving from 122nd globally in 2014 to 29th in 2025. This dramatic rise indicates a substantial decline in violent crime, supported by comprehensive security policies, investment in law enforcement infrastructure, and community-based crime prevention strategies.

Reduction in Homicide Rates

Egypt also saw improvements in the homicide rate indicator, which measures the number of murders per 100,000 people. The country advanced 14 positions in this index, reaching 50th place in 2025 compared to 64th in 2014, signaling a steady decline in lethal criminal activity.

Perception of Safety Among Citizens

Perhaps the most striking improvement came in the perception of safety within society, an index measuring citizens’ sense of security when walking alone at night. Egypt advanced 111 positions, rising from 143rd place in 2014 to 32nd in 2025. The corresponding perception score improved from 3.75 in 2014—placing Egypt among the 20 worst-performing countries—to 1.9 in 2025, categorizing it among nations with the lowest crime perception and highlighting the success of social stability initiatives.

The Cabinet emphasized that these gains have not only enhanced public safety but also contributed positively to Egypt’s broader development goals, boosting public confidence and creating a secure environment conducive to economic and social growth.

Experts attribute this transformation to a combination of rigorous law enforcement, community policing initiatives, modernization of the judicial system, and targeted social programs aimed at addressing root causes of crime. These measures collectively reflect a decade-long commitment to reshaping Egypt’s security landscape and enhancing the overall quality of life for citizens.
