Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Wednesday called for a comprehensive humanitarian truce in Sudan, following reports of atrocities committed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the western city of Al Fasher.
Abdelatty met with his Sudanese counterpart, Mohieddin Salem Ahmed, in Cairo to discuss the deteriorating situation in Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, which fell under RSF control on Sunday.
The Egyptian minister emphasized the urgent need for a humanitarian truce to allow safe delivery of aid and to alleviate the suffering of civilians affected by the conflict. “Egypt fully supports the brotherly Sudanese people and is committed to continuing its efforts to achieve stability and peace in Sudan,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Atrocities and Humanitarian Violations
On Tuesday, Arab nations and regional organizations condemned what they described as “grave humanitarian violations” by the RSF during their takeover of Al Fasher.
Authorities in Sudan and international organizations have accused the RSF of committing “massacres and humanitarian violations,” including summary executions, arbitrary arrests, and the forced displacement of civilians. The city had been under siege by the RSF for over a year prior to the assault.
Since April 15, 2023, Sudan’s army and the RSF have been engaged in a deadly conflict that has so far killed thousands and displaced more than 15 million people. Despite numerous regional and international mediation efforts, a resolution has yet to be achieved.
