Ahmed Kamel – Egypt Daily News
In a renewed push to position Egypt as a global logistics hub, the Ministry of Transport has invited American companies to invest in new container terminals at Alexandria Port. The announcement was made by Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Industry, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, during a recent inspection tour of the port, attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Egypt.
The proposed projects form part of the broader Alexandria Grand Port initiative, which aims to integrate and develop the Dekheila and El-Max port areas under a single umbrella. According to El-Wazir, the plan includes the construction of high-capacity container terminals and advanced logistics zones with the goal of attracting major international shipping lines and reinforcing Egypt’s strategic role in global trade.
U.S. Companies Encouraged to Join Egypt’s Logistics Transformation
During his remarks, El-Wazir urged American firms to take an active role in developing large-scale logistics infrastructure within the port. “We are opening the door for new American investments in Alexandria to help transform Egypt into a key global logistics gateway,” he stated.
He emphasized that the creation of modern logistics centers and cargo-handling facilities would not only boost port efficiency but also support Egypt’s national plan to become a regional trade and transportation nexus.
Success of Tahya Misr 1 Terminal Sets Precedent
El-Wazir highlighted the success of the Tahya Misr 1 container terminal, which is currently operated by French shipping giant CMA CGM. The terminal has already attracted several international shipping lines since becoming operational, significantly increasing throughput and revenue at Alexandria Port.
The Ministry of Transport had previously signed a management and operations agreement with CMA CGM to oversee the terminal, a move that officials say has enhanced operational standards and positioned Alexandria as a competitive port in the Mediterranean.
High-Speed Rail Network Also on the Agenda
In a separate announcement, El-Wazir discussed ongoing negotiations with leading international companies for the management and operation of Egypt’s new high-speed rail system. The project envisions a network of three lines spanning approximately 2,000 kilometers, with the first phase, stretching 660 kilometers from Ain Sokhna to Matrouh, currently under construction and set to be inaugurated next year.
“The first line will be a game changer for passenger and freight mobility in Egypt,” El-Wazir noted. “We are seeking experienced global partners to operate and manage this system to ensure world-class service.”
The development of Egypt’s high-speed rail network is part of the country’s broader national infrastructure strategy, aiming to modernize transportation, reduce travel times, and facilitate economic growth across key urban and industrial zones.
Outlook: Alexandria as a Global Gateway
With significant investment opportunities on the table and a demonstrated commitment to modernizing port and rail infrastructure, Egypt is positioning itself as a central player in international logistics and maritime trade. The outreach to American companies reflects Cairo’s strategy to diversify its global partnerships and bring in cutting-edge expertise to support its economic transformation.
If successful, the projects at Alexandria Port and the broader high-speed rail network could dramatically reshape Egypt’s transportation landscape and cement its status as a logistical powerhouse in the region.
