Egypt’s national football team heads into its Group Stage clash against Angola with confidence, ambition, and a clear objective: victory. Speaking ahead of the decisive third-round match in the Africa Cup of Nations group stage, head coach Hassam Hassan struck an assured tone, emphasizing both respect for the opponent and belief in his squad’s ability to deliver a strong performance.
Hassan described the Angola match as particularly significant for the Pharaohs, not only because of its immediate impact on the group standings, but also as an important technical test ahead of the knockout rounds. He stressed that Egypt will play to win, while also using the encounter to fine-tune tactical elements for the challenges ahead.
“Angola are a strong and respectable team,” Hassan said. “We respect all our opponents, but Egypt always plays for victory. This match is an opportunity to gain maximum benefit, both in terms of result and performance.”
The former Egypt striker, now leading the national side from the bench, highlighted the spirit and determination within the squad, describing them as hallmarks of a team accustomed to competing at the highest level. He reiterated that Egypt’s ultimate goal remains unchanged: to compete for and win the Africa Cup of Nations title.
“Our players have character and fighting spirit,” Hassan noted. “That is natural for a big national team. We want to make our fans happy, and we believe the best is yet to come.”
Squad Depth and Confidence in the Numbers
Hassan also revealed encouraging details about the squad’s readiness, confirming that all 28 players in the camp are fit and available for selection. Notably, 19 players have already featured across the first two matches, a statistic he described as a sign of trust in the entire group and evidence of the squad’s depth.
“We approach every match with the plan that gives us the best chance to win,” he explained. “I thank the players for their discipline and their ability to adapt to different tactical approaches. I have great confidence in everyone, especially players like Trezeguet and Zizo, who have the flexibility to perform in more than one position.”
Hassan was keen to temper expectations by reminding observers that the tournament remains long and demanding. While Egypt are among the favorites, he emphasized the importance of focus, patience, and gradual progression toward the later stages.
Praise for Key Players and Supporters
Addressing questions about individual players, Hassan offered strong backing to several of his stars. He praised goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, describing him as a great and experienced figure, while affirming his confidence in all four goalkeepers in the squad. He also defended right-back Mohamed Hany following his recent red card, noting that such decisions are part of football and refereeing.
Hassan added that Egypt are fully prepared for any opponent in the Round of 16, regardless of who they face.
Beyond the pitch, the Egypt coach expressed gratitude to Moroccan fans for their support, calling it a natural expression of unity between neighboring nations. He also recalled how Egyptian supporters stood behind Morocco during the World Cup, describing this mutual backing as the true spirit of football.
Trezeguet: We Play Only to Win

Midfielder Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” echoed his coach’s confidence, making it clear that Egypt’s mentality remains uncompromising. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, he stated that the team approaches every game with a single objective: victory.
“Angola are a strong team,” Trezeguet said. “We started preparing for this match immediately after the South Africa game. Our goal is to win every match we play.”
The Trabzonspor star underlined the strength and professionalism of the squad, stressing that players are ready to serve wherever the technical staff needs them. He also spoke glowingly about Hassan, describing him as a role model and one of Egypt’s greatest football legends.
“We are in Morocco for one reason only: to win the tournament and raise our country’s name high,” Trezeguet added. “Hassam Hassan is an example for all of us. He has great football knowledge, passion, and an incredible winning mentality.”
As Egypt prepare to face Angola, confidence within the camp appears high, but so too does the sense of responsibility that comes with being continental heavyweights. With experience, depth, and ambition on their side, the Pharaohs will look to translate words into action when they step onto the pitch.
