Egypt Daily News – Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad, said that the Nile River is an international river and subject to international law, in the context of discussing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam crisis.
He added during a press conference with his Cameroonian counterpart in Cairo today, Wednesday, that for this reason, Egypt went to the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities, and he affirmed that the continuation of the problem poses a threat to international peace and security.
Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, stated that the downstream countries will face a challenge with the operation phase of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, noting that the construction and filling phases have been surpassed.
He said during a press conference from the administrative capital on Wednesday that the statements of his Ethiopian counterpart Abiy Ahmed regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the non-acceptance of harm to Egypt and Sudan are good but need to be implemented.
He added: “Instead of being a statement, we demand that it be put in the form of an agreement that countries commit to, and we affirm that we are not against development in any African country, especially the Nile Basin countries.”
He pointed out Egypt’s announcement of providing funding for developmental projects in Nile Basin countries, but without harming Egypt’s water interests.
