Egypt’s Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel Ati held a telephone conversation on Friday, January 23, with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the latest developments in Gaza and Sudan, underscoring Egypt’s ongoing diplomatic engagement in regional crises.

At the start of the call, Secretary-General Guterres conveyed his greetings and appreciation to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, commending his leadership in promoting security and stability in a region facing complex challenges. The UN chief praised Egypt’s continuous efforts to strengthen international peace and security, highlighting its role as a key mediator in regional conflicts.

The conversation focused extensively on the situation in the Gaza Strip, including efforts to implement the second phase of the U.S.-led plan for stabilization and reconstruction. Minister Abdel Ati emphasized the importance of moving forward with key measures, such as the deployment of an international stabilization force, support for the National Committee for Gaza’s administration, reopening the Rafah crossing in both directions, and ensuring Israeli withdrawal from the territory. These steps, he noted, are critical to restoring stability and preparing the ground for a return to normal life for Gaza’s residents.

Abdel Ati also stressed the need to complete the second-phase objectives and launch an early recovery and reconstruction process guided by a comprehensive approach that prioritizes the needs of the population. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to facilitating humanitarian assistance and supporting initiatives that ensure long-term peace and development in the region.

The discussion further addressed developments in Sudan, where the Foreign Minister highlighted the urgency of establishing a humanitarian truce, safe shelters, and secure corridors as a precursor to a comprehensive ceasefire. He emphasized the importance of launching an inclusive Sudanese-led political process to achieve lasting peace. Abdel Ati reaffirmed Egypt’s consistent position on respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, safeguarding its territorial integrity, and supporting its national institutions during this critical period.

Diplomatic analysts note that Egypt’s active engagement with both Gaza and Sudan reflects its broader strategy to stabilize neighboring regions amid ongoing crises, positioning Cairo as a key interlocutor for regional security and humanitarian coordination. The dialogue between Cairo and the UN signals a continued commitment to collaborative international efforts aimed at conflict resolution and reconstruction.
