Egypt’s House of Representatives on Monday elected former head of the Central Auditing Organization Hisham Badawi as its new speaker, securing an overwhelming majority of 521 votes in the chamber’s inaugural session of the new legislative term.
Badawi’s election comes at the start of the third legislative term and reflects broad parliamentary support for his leadership, administrative background, and long experience in state oversight institutions. His appointment is widely seen as part of efforts to reinforce institutional discipline and strengthen the parliament’s supervisory role during a period of economic reform and legislative activity.
A veteran public official, Badawi previously served as head of the Central Auditing Organization, Egypt’s top state watchdog responsible for monitoring public spending and safeguarding state funds. During his tenure, he was closely associated with financial oversight, accountability, and administrative reform, credentials that lawmakers cited as key to his suitability for leading the chamber.
In his first remarks after the vote, Badawi pledged to uphold the constitution, ensure balanced cooperation between the legislative and executive authorities, and promote constructive debate within parliament. He stressed the importance of passing legislation that directly serves citizens’ interests while maintaining rigorous oversight of government performance.
The new House of Representatives is expected to play a pivotal role over the coming years, particularly in reviewing economic legislation, social protection measures, and laws related to investment, public finance, and administrative reform. Observers say Badawi’s background in auditing and financial governance could shape a more assertive parliamentary approach to fiscal oversight and transparency.
The election was conducted in accordance with parliamentary regulations, with MPs casting their votes in a secret ballot. Badawi’s decisive victory underscored the strong backing he enjoys across political blocs and independents within the chamber.
As speaker, Badawi will preside over parliamentary sessions, oversee legislative procedures, and represent the House in its relations with other state institutions and foreign parliaments. His leadership will be closely watched as the new legislature begins work on a demanding agenda amid domestic economic challenges and evolving regional dynamics.
