Egypt Daily News – The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently announced a high-level visit to Eritrea by key Egyptian officials, including the head of the Egyptian General Intelligence, Abbas Kamel, and Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atti.
During their visit to Asmara, they met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, where they discussed various issues, including the political and security developments in the region.
This visit comes on the heels of a military cooperation protocol signed between Egypt and Somalia amid ongoing tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia.
The conflict arose after Ethiopia, which is landlocked, signed a memorandum allowing the Somaliland region to lease a seaport, a move that was met with disapproval from both Egypt and Somalia.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s statement published on their official Facebook page, the ministers conveyed a message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to President Afwerki.
They discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and addressed regional challenges, particularly concerning the navigation and trade flow through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the broader stability of the Horn of Africa.
The ministry’s statement underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve stability in Sudan, support national state institutions there, and maintain Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. Both parties recognized the necessity of ongoing consultations and intensified efforts to address these critical issues.
