Egypt Daily News – Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump met today, Wednesday, with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in the capital, Riyadh. Photos published by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) showed the meeting taking place in Riyadh ahead of the U.S.-Gulf summit.

Normalization of Relations
This came before Trump later emphasized in a speech during the Gulf summit—which included leaders and representatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council—that “normalizing relations with Syria begins with meeting Al-Sharaa.”
He also added that he is “considering normalizing relations with the new Syrian government” and confirmed that lifting sanctions on Syria aims to give it a fresh start.

What are the key sanctions Trump decided to lift from Syria?
With U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Tuesday to lift sanctions on Syria, years of economic blockade that followed the 2011 uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s regime come to an end. These sanctions had targeted the oil and banking sectors, imposed restrictions on former officials, and included the “Caesar Act,” which caused a sharp collapse in the value of the Syrian pound and a severe shortage of essential food and medical supplies.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday on the sidelines of the U.S.-Gulf summit.
