Egypt Daily News – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran responded to a letter sent by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he invited Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear program.
Araghchi said on Thursday that Tehran sent its response to Trump’s letter on Wednesday through Oman, according to the Iranian news agency “IRNA.”
He added, “The Iranian response includes an explanation of our view on the current situation and on the U.S. president’s message.” The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized that “Iran’s policy remains based on not negotiating under pressure and military threats.”
Trump follows a maximum pressure policy against Tehran to force it to negotiate over its nuclear program, which Washington wants Iran to abandon, while Tehran asserts that its program is peaceful and aims to strengthen its energy sector.
Reports indicated that Trump’s letter included warnings to Iran about “severe consequences” if it rejected Trump’s offer to negotiate a new nuclear deal within two months. Deadlock surrounds the indirect talks between Washington and Tehran, aimed at returning to the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and the major international powers, along with Germany.
The United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in May 2018 and reinstated economic sanctions on Iran. In response, Tehran abandoned some of the restrictions on its nuclear activities outlined in the agreement.
Due to its nuclear program development, Iran is subject to U.S. sanctions, which, among other things, impose a ban on both government accounts and the accounts of officials and legal entities.
