Egypt Daily News – On Saturday, informed Iraqi sources revealed the existence of an arrest warrant issued by the Iraqi judiciary against “Ahmed Al-Sharaa,” known as “Abu Muhammad al-Julani,” the leader of Jabhat Tahrir al-Sham.
The sources told Shafaq News Agency, “During his presence in Iraq when he was in Al-Qaeda, he was arrested by the Americans between 2007 and 2008, but then he was released by the Americans themselves,” The Iraqi side had no relationship, and no ruling was issued against him by the Iraqi judiciary at the time.”
The sources indicated: “But after detainees confessed to various terrorist charges against Al-Julani, a subsequent arrest warrant was issued against him years ago, without a judicial ruling.”
The day before yesterday, Thursday, the commander of the Military Operations Department, Ahmed Al-Sharaa (Abu Muhammad Al-Julani), denied that he had previously participated in the battles in Iraq when they deviated towards sectarianism, stressing that the body he leads had severed its relationship with Al-Qaeda.
Al-Sharaa explained that he is currently working in accordance with the highest Syrian interests, adding: “We currently have no relationship with any external organizations or parties.”
It is noteworthy that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as the Al-Nusra Front, announced its final separation from Al-Qaeda in 2016. Since then, it has softened its policy and actions in Idlib, where it had the greatest reach and the broadest authority.
