Israel strikes Lebanon

Egypt Daily News – Lebanese authorities have reported that 1,540 people have been killed since the escalation began nearly a year ago, especially following the recent war involving Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The latest reports indicate that over 31,000 individuals, predominantly Lebanese, have fled into Syria over the last two days to escape Israeli airstrikes.

Data from the Lebanese government’s “Disaster Risk Management Unit” reveals that there were 60 deaths in the last 24 hours alone, and a staggering 5,410 injuries have been reported as a result of “Israeli assaults on Lebanon,” which have notably intensified since last Monday.

Israeli airstrikes on that Monday resulted in 558 deaths. In a related development, the Israeli army has conducted operations targeting Hezbollah, including a reported strike that eliminated Muhammad Hussein Sarour, the commander of Hezbollah’s air unit, although Hezbollah has not officially confirmed his death and some reports suggest he may have only sustained serious injuries.

Additionally, Israeli fighter jets attacked infrastructure along the Syrian-Lebanese border, aimed at disrupting Hezbollah’s capabilities to transfer weapons.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Israel will persist in its military actions against Hezbollah until assurances can be made for the safety of residents in northern Israel. He has rejected calls from the United States and allies for a 21-day ceasefire, stating that operations against Hezbollah will continue unabated.

This refusal comes amidst a joint call for a ceasefire from various nations, including the U.S., France, Germany, and others, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot advocating for a trilateral approach to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader regional conflict.

This proposal emerged from discussions following the recent United Nations General Assembly and was aimed at establishing a temporary ceasefire to stabilize the region.
