Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lapid wrote:
“Today the world witnessed a worn-out and complaining Israeli prime minister, delivering a speech full of tired tricks.”
He continued:
“Netanyahu didn’t present a plan to bring the hostages home, didn’t offer a solution to end the war, and didn’t explain why Hamas hasn’t been defeated after nearly two years.”
Lapid criticized the speech for failing to address Israel’s deteriorating diplomatic position, stating:
“Instead of stopping the diplomatic tsunami, Netanyahu made Israel’s global standing worse.”
He also condemned the unprecedented act of broadcasting Netanyahu’s speech through loudspeakers in Gaza, calling it dangerous and undemocratic:
“Unfortunately, Netanyahu is not Kim Jong Un, and the Israeli army doesn’t need to broadcast a ruler’s speech through loudspeakers while putting its soldiers at risk in the field. This is sheer madness, unworthy of a democratic state.”
The speech was also met with widespread protest, as numerous international delegates walked out in a visible demonstration against Netanyahu’s policies.
