Egypt Daily News -Alicia Sanders-Zacker, policy and research coordinator for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said that Israel has long been independently producing its own nuclear weapons.
“Israel is believed to possess approximately 90 nuclear weapons, which can be launched from missiles, aircraft, and possibly from the sea,” Sanders-Zacker said.
She continued: “The Israeli nuclear weapons program was initially supported by technology and materials provided by France and Norway in the 1950s without the knowledge of the United States. Today, experts believe that the Israeli nuclear weapons program is almost certainly self-sufficient.”
She added that Israel likely helped apartheid-era South Africa obtain nuclear weapons in the 1970s, and there are strong suspicions that the two countries conducted nuclear tests in the South Atlantic in 1979. The South African government later disposed of its nuclear weapons before moving from the apartheid regime into a democratic system of government.
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is an international public organization founded in 2007. Its goals are to promote approval and implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
