180 dead off the coast of Yemen

Egypt Daily News – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that more than 180 migrants are missing and feared dead after two boats capsize in rough seas off the coast of Yemen on Thursday.

According to the organization, the boats were carrying migrants from a country in the Horn of Africa and overturned off the coast of Dhubab District in Yemen’s Taiz Governorate.

Tamim Alian, spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stated on Friday that “there were weather warnings, and the boats sank due to rough seas. Only two Yemeni crew members were rescued, and it is feared that all passengers and the rest of the crew have perished. No bodies have been recovered so far.”

Earlier on Friday, the organization posted on X that at least 186 people were missing after four boats carrying migrants capsized off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti overnight, referring to the same incident.

The IOM, which tracks migrants who have died or gone missing along migration routes, reported that 558 people lost their lives on the route between the Horn of Africa and Yemen last year.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people flee the chronically unstable Horn of Africa in search of better economic conditions in the Gulf countries, using the so-called Eastern Route, which the IOM describes as one of the busiest and most dangerous migration corridors in the world.
