Egypt Daily News – The plenary session of the Parliament, chaired by Counselor Dr. Hanafi Gebali, approved a presidential decree regarding an agreement with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to develop a detailed roadmap aimed at reducing methane emissions in Egypt’s petroleum sector.
This agreement, signed on December 12, 2024, grants the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation a $959,006 grant from the USTDA to fund this vital project.
Reducing Methane Emissions
The agreement aims to provide specialized technical support through the global consultancy firm S&P Global, which had previously collaborated in drafting a preliminary roadmap for reducing methane emissions. That model was unveiled during Carbon Reduction Day at the COP27 Climate Conference hosted by Egypt.
This step aligns with the state’s broader efforts to adopt more sustainable practices in the energy sector and contribute meaningfully to global climate change mitigation efforts.
The Green Facility Program
The parliament also approved a financing agreement for the “Green Facility” program between the European Union and Egypt, which includes a grant of 7 million euros.
The program’s general goal is to support Egypt’s transition to a green economy in the energy and water sectors while addressing climate and environmental challenges.
It aims to diversify energy sources and shift toward a low-emission economy, with a focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency. This aligns with Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy “Vision 2030” and the country’s “Nexus of Water, Food and Energy” (NWFE) initiative.
Climate Change Impacts
Specific objectives of the program include establishing and improving strategies and frameworks in the energy and water sectors to address the impacts of climate change, supporting the most vulnerable areas, and enhancing governance practices and capabilities at the sector level to implement sustainable green economy standards.
According to the agreement, four ministries will benefit from the program:
- Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources
- Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy
- Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation
- Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities
The program will be implemented through direct procurement management, using purchases to achieve the stated objectives.
