Cairo and other northern Egyptian regions experienced unusual weather on Friday, February 13, 2026, as the arrival of pink sand swept across the country, prompting meteorological warnings and public safety advisories.
According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, satellite imagery at 11 a.m. showed significant dust and sand activity originating in the western desert and gradually advancing toward the Nile Delta, Greater Cairo, the Suez Canal cities, and northern coastal areas. The phenomenon, characterized by pink-hued airborne dust, has reduced horizontal visibility in several locations and disrupted maritime navigation in the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Mediterranean Sea.
Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads, while residents with sinus conditions or allergies were advised to wear protective masks. The authority highlighted that these conditions are particularly challenging for vulnerable populations, including those with respiratory sensitivities.
Meteorologists attributed the dust storms to strong southwesterly winds affecting northern Egypt, including the Cairo region. These winds stirred the desert sands, causing visibility hazards and contributing to a temporary rise in temperatures across much of the country. The phenomenon coincided with the start of the month of Amshir in the Coptic calendar, marking seasonal atmospheric changes that often bring dust and wind activity.
The Egyptian Meteorological Authority emphasized that detailed forecasts would be issued once numerical weather models stabilize, ensuring accurate guidance for the public. Throughout Friday, the agency used its official social media channels to update citizens on wind speeds, dust concentrations, and safety measures, reflecting a proactive approach to weather-related hazards.
Experts note that while pink sand storms are not uncommon in Egypt, their reach into urban centers like Cairo demonstrates the ongoing impact of desert winds on major population centers, underscoring the importance of public awareness and preparedness during such events.
