Sisi Meets IAEA Director General

Today, President El-Sisi met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi. The meeting was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, and Director of the General Intelligence Service, Major General Hassan Rashad.

Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said that commencing the meeting, the President emphasized Egypt’s appreciation for the IAEA’s significant role in supporting the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime.

President El-Sisi noted that this contribution serves to enhance international peace and security, in addition to maximizing the benefits derived from the peaceful uses of atomic energy. The President expressed appreciation for ongoing efforts to expand the frameworks of cooperation between Egypt and the Agency.

The President confirmed that Egypt has consistently been at the forefront of countries supporting the disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation regime, given its objective of achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.

President El-Sisi noted that Egypt continuously affirms the imperative of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, and looks forward to the IAEA enhancing its role in strengthening efforts toward achieving the universality of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and rendering the Middle East a nuclear-weapon-free zone.

For his part, the IAEA Director General commended Egypt’s dynamic and historic role in the field of disarmament, as well as its efforts in this regard.

The meeting also focused on regional developments. President El-Sisi reviewed Egypt’s efforts to restore regional stability, stressing the imperative of adopting a comprehensive approach to address all issues pertinent to regional security in the Middle East, thereby ensuring security and stability in the region.
