Egypt Daily News – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi emphasized the critical importance of preserving Egypt’s water resources, describing it as an “existential issue” for the nation. His remarks come in the context of ongoing tensions with Ethiopia regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River, which Egypt perceives as a significant threat to its water supply.
While Egypt relies on the Nile for over 98% of its water, Ethiopia contends that the dam is vital for its economic development.
Years of negotiations between Egypt and Ethiopia have failed to produce a consensus regarding the filling and operation of the dam.
During a water-related event in Cairo, President Sisi reiterated Egypt’s view that the Nile is not just a water source, but a matter of survival for the Egyptian people.
He called for sustained political commitment, diplomatic efforts, and collaboration with neighboring countries to safeguard this essential resource.
President Sisi also highlighted Egypt’s efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in water management with several African nations, particularly those within the Nile Basin.
He urged the international community to bolster support for African countries in managing water resources, advocating for greater funding and technological assistance to promote water security, development, and peace across the continent.
