Egypt Daily News – Jean-Noel Barrot, French Foreign Minister, said on Wednesday that the European Union will not allow any country to attack its sovereign borders. The statements came; In response to US President Donald Trump’s threats against Denmark and his refusal to rule out the use of force to annex Greenland.
Greenland, the largest island in the world, is an autonomous region of Denmark, but it is not part of the European Union. Greenland left the European Union following a referendum in 1985. Denmark still controls its foreign and security policy.
Barrow said during an interview with France Inter radio station, in response to a question about the possibility of Washington trying to seize Greenland from Denmark by force: “It is clear that the European Union cannot allow any country in the world, whatever it may be, and I would like to say Starting with Russia, by attacking its sovereign borders,” he added, “We are a strong continent, and we need to strengthen ourselves further.”
Barrow added that he does not expect Trump to invade Greenland, but believes that Europe needs to “wake up” to an unsafe world, repeating statements made by French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week.
During the press conference, which was held yesterday, Tuesday, Trump threatened to impose “very high tariffs” on Denmark unless it gives up control of Greenland. He also suggested the possibility of the United States annexing Canada, calling on NATO members to spend 5% of their gross domestic product on defence, more than double the current target.
When asked whether he would rule out using military force or economic coercion to seize Greenland or control the Panama Canal, Trump replied: “No, I can’t assure you either, but I can say this: We need them for reasons related to economic security, we need Greenland for national security reasons.
