Egypt Daily News – The Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, announced that “the emergency Arab summit, scheduled to be held in Egypt on February 27, may be postponed.”
Zaki attributed the possible delay to “logistical considerations related to the schedules of Arab leaders.”
In this regard, he confirmed in television statements that “Egypt’s desire to ensure the participation of as many leaders as possible to enhance the summit’s effectiveness is the main reason for any potential change in its date.”
Regarding the summit’s agenda, Zaki clarified that it aims to “unify the Arab stance on the Palestinian issue, especially in light of the Arab rejection of the displacement plan proposed by Israel and later adopted by the U.S. administration.”
He added that Egypt “will present a proposal focused on rebuilding the Gaza Strip through the efforts of the Palestinians themselves, ensuring the creation of local job opportunities without the need to displace residents outside the strip.”
He emphasized that the summit will issue an official document “reflecting this position, reaffirming support for the Palestinian people and strengthening their resilience.”
U.S. President Donald Trump had proposed a plan for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and relocate its Palestinian residents to other countries, primarily Egypt and Jordan, a proposal that was rejected by Arab countries and Palestinians.
In this regard, Zaki confirmed that the Arab stance on the U.S. plan “will become clearer during official discussions with the U.S. side,” but he stressed that the foundation “must be respect for the will of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.”
He also pointed out that Palestinians “reject the options proposed by Israel, whether imposing control over Gaza, appointing an authority to govern it, or evacuating the strip’s residents,” considering that the acceptable solution is “for the Palestinians to govern themselves until a comprehensive settlement is reached.”
Regarding the five-party summit to be held in Riyadh, which includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, and Qatar, Zaki stated that these countries “have maintained continuous coordination since the start of the war in Gaza, through regular meetings at the level of foreign ministers and relevant officials.”
He explained that “the possibility of inviting Palestine to attend this summit is likely,” adding that it could result in the formulation of “a general framework for the Arab stance to be later presented to the Arab League.”
