Trump speaks of displacing Palestinians

Egypt Daily News – US President Donald Trump said that he spoke to the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, regarding the transfer of people from the devastating Gaza Strip to neighboring countries, noting that he would speak with the Egyptian President about this as well.

Trump said, “I said to him, ‘I’d love for you to take on more because I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now, and it’s a mess,’” Mr. Trump told reporters on Air Force One. He added that he would also like Egypt to take in more Palestinians and that he would speak to the country’s president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, on Sunday.

On his call to the King of Jordan, Trump said, “It was a very good call. He is my friend. We agree well. I dealt with him over the years very well. He has done a great job. He harbored millions of Palestinians and does so in a very human way. I praised him on so Jordan has done an amazing work in housing the Palestinians to a large extent.

He continued: “I don’t know, something has to happen, but it’s literally a demolition site right now. Almost everything’s demolished and people are dying there, so I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing in a different location where I think they could maybe live in peace for a change.”

The president, a former property developer, said that the potential housing “could be temporary” or “could be long-term.”

An official of Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that runs Gaza, reacted with suspicion to the remarks, echoing longstanding Palestinian fears about being driven permanently from their homes. They have vowed to oppose any such action, and the comments will likely outrage Palestinians in Gaza, who see the territory as their ancestral home.
