Egypt Daily News – NATO has issues a statement regarding the meeting that took place between Secretary General Mark Rutte and US President-elect Donald Trump in Florida, on Friday and that the meeting discussed “a range of global security issues” facing the alliance.
NATO is currently facing some of its most difficult challenges in supporting Ukraine and it’s expected to become even more challenging if the USA withdraws it’s support, as Trump has raised doubts that the United states commitment to Kiev might stop.
Trump recently chose Matthew Whitaker, who served as acting attorney general during Trump’s first term, to be the US ambassador to NATO.
If confirmed, Whitaker will also likely be tasked with increasing pressure on NATO countries to increase their defense spending, and renewing Trump’s efforts during his first term.
During his election campaign, Trump indicated that he would only comply with NATO’s mutual defense commitments to countries that contribute enough of their annual defense budgets.
