Egypt Daily News – US President-elect Donald Trump revealed on Monday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping are holding talks through representatives, and that he believes they will reach a consensus.
“We’re actually talking. We’re talking through their representatives,” Trump said in an interview with conservative broadcaster Hugh Hewitt. Trump, who is being inaugurated as president on January 20, described Xi as a strong and capable man, and said that he is respected in China.
Trump added, “I think we would get along very well. I expect so, but you know, this has to be a two-way street.” Trump repeated his accusation that China is “plundering” the United States economically.
Trump invited Xi and other foreign leaders to his inauguration in Washington later this month, but experts do not think the Chinese leader is likely to attend.
Trump has appointed a number of anti-China hardliners to key positions in his next administration, including Senator Marco Rubio, to the position of Secretary of State.
He also announced that he would impose an additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods unless Beijing makes greater efforts to stop the trafficking of the highly addictive drug fentanyl and threatened to impose tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese goods during his election campaign.
