Egypt Daily News – While Israel is preparing for a potential military operation in the Gaza Strip, possibly gradual to pressure Hamas, it appears uneasy about the direct Washington negotiations with Hamas.
Netanyahu has instructed ministers not to discuss the issue publicly, while Israeli sources say the concern and frustration in Israel stem from the fact that the U.S. seeks to secure a deal regarding detainees with American citizenship, whether alive or deceased. This could impact the overall agreement and potentially oblige Israel to make commitments, such as extending the ceasefire.
The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth revealed that Washington is accusing Israel of attempting to sabotage the direct negotiations with Hamas. Last week, Israel’s intervention—through a call with the U.S. National Security Advisor—led to the cancellation of a session that was set to address other matters related to Gaza.
Additionally, the news of the negotiations was leaked from Israel.
Despite Israeli frustration, Netanyahu appears to be benefiting from the U.S. initiative as he faces pressure from far-right ministers ahead of the budget approval at the end of the month. The American-led negotiations prevent a return to full-scale war before diplomatic efforts are exhausted, allowing Netanyahu to justify avoiding direct confrontation with Trump.
