Egypt Daily News – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington will communicate with Russia today, Wednesday, regarding the agreement reached with Ukraine on a 30-day truce and steps to end the war.
During a brief stop in Ireland after talks with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, he added, “We are all eagerly awaiting the Russian response and strongly urge them to consider ending all hostilities.”He continued, “If they say no, we will have to reassess everything, determine our position, and understand their true intentions. I believe that if they refuse, we will learn a lot about their goals and way of thinking.”
Rubio did not elaborate on the U.S. response if Russian officials reject the agreement, but he stated that previous talks with Moscow indicated a willingness to end the conflict. He emphasized that a ceasefire should be monitored to ensure both sides comply.
Rubio also noted that U.S. officials had discussed territorial concessions in their talks with the Ukrainians, but most of the discussions focused on the negotiation process.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “Ukraine wants long-term security. So, I think the real question is more about deterrence. Can Ukraine establish sufficient deterrence against any future aggression, attack, or invasion?”
Rubio also confirmed that a forthcoming U.S.-Ukraine mineral investment agreement would give Washington a direct interest in Ukraine’s security. However, he stopped short of calling it the security guarantees Kyiv has been requesting from the West.
He said, “I can’t consider it a security guarantee, but certainly, if Washington has a direct economic interest that generates revenue for both our people and the people of Ukraine, we will have a vested interest in protecting it.”
The U.S. Secretary of State also emphasized that European allies should play a role in any potential peace agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war. He stated, “I believe it is essential for them to be involved,” noting that Russia will likely seek the lifting of European sanctions imposed after the war began.
Resumption of U.S. Arms Supplies
This comes as officials confirmed that U.S. arms supplies to Ukraine have resumed, following the Biden administration’s reversal of the suspension of military aid to Kyiv. Ukrainian officials also signaled their willingness to implement a 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced today that U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine via Poland have resumed. After more than eight hours of talks between Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the United States agreed to restart military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
Sikorski said, “I confirm this, Weapons deliveries through Jasionka have returned to their previous levels.” The airport in the town of Jasionka, in southeastern Poland, serves as the main supply hub through which most aid deliveries to Ukraine are made.
During a press conference in Warsaw with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibha, Sikorski stated that Poland is satisfied with the new proposals regarding Ukraine.
For his part, Sibha confirmed that Ukraine supports and accepts the U.S. proposal for a 30-day truce. He said, “We are ready to form an appropriate team on our side that will work on this roadmap to achieve the truce if it happens.”
The United States had suspended its aid to Ukraine last week following a heated exchange between Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
