Egypt Daily News – Israeli police evacuated several towns near occupied Jerusalem on Wednesday as rapidly spreading wildfires swept through the area, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider requesting assistance from Greece.
According to Israeli police and media reports, towns located about 20 kilometers west of Jerusalem were evacuated, while firefighting teams rushed to contain the flames, as reported by Sky News Arabia.
Speaking from the headquarters of the national fire service, Netanyahu instructed officials to open communication channels with Greece and other countries in case international help becomes necessary.
Netanyahu said, “We don’t know how these fires will develop,” calling for strict measures to extinguish them.
He added, “It simply must not reach Jerusalem,”
He continued, “Of course, we are defending the communities within the city’s perimeter,” and said he is preparing to call on reserves from other countries such as Greece.
Wildfires pose a recurring threat in Israel during periods of extreme heat.
