Egypt Daily News – Yesterday, Lieutenant General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the eastern Libyan forces, met with Abbas Kamel, head of Egyptian General Intelligence, in Benghazi to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Libya.

The meeting emphasized the strong fraternal ties between Libya and Egypt, with Haftar welcoming Kamel and expressing appreciation for Egypt’s support for Libya’s unity and stability.

During their discussions, the two leaders focused on the political developments regarding the Libyan crisis, highlighting the necessity of advancing the political process to facilitate upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

They also addressed the need to support the United Nations mission in Libya, which is working to create suitable conditions for organizing the electoral process.

Libya has been in a state of political turmoil for about four years, characterized by a power struggle between two rival governments: one established by the House of Representatives and led by Osama Hammad, which controls the eastern regions and parts of the south, and the other being the National Unity Government led by Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, which governs the western part of the country from the capital, Tripoli.

The United Nations is actively seeking to resolve this crisis by facilitating elections to renew the legitimacy of current governing bodies.
