Egypt Daily News – Sudan is grappling with a severe cholera outbreak, as announced by the Minister of Health, Haitham Ibrahim, who reported that the death toll has risen to 354 cases and 22 fatalities.
During a recent briefing with Vice President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Malik Agar, Minister Ibrahim discussed the alarming health situation, focusing on cholera and other epidemics exacerbated by deteriorating environmental conditions and access to clean water, particularly in Kassala and Gedaref states.
The meeting highlighted the stability of the pharmaceutical situation in Sudan, aided by the inauguration of main warehouses in the Red Sea, as the government begins to implement a five-year strategy for medical supplies.
Ongoing arrangements were made for an upcoming visit by the Director of the World Health Organization, Yara, to evaluate the current health landscape amid the backdrop of ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for adequate medical supplies and access to humanitarian aid in hard-hit regions like the Blue and White Nile and Darfur.
Authorities are urging for immediate assistance from the international community, especially after the official declaration of the cholera outbreak, which follows laboratory confirmations of cholera bacteria in affected regions.
The dire situation has also prompted neighboring Egypt to implement precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease across borders.
