Egypt Daily News – Al-Azhar, the Islamic institution based in Cairo, has released a strong condemnation of remarks made by right-wing Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir regarding the establishment of a Jewish synagogue at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Al-Azhar described Ben Gvir’s statements as “extremist and provocative,” emphasizing that they come from a mindset that disregards religious sanctities and international laws.

In its statement, Al-Azhar insisted that the Al-Aqsa Mosque, including its entire area, is an Islamic heritage site and a historical right for Muslims.

It referred to the mosque as the first qiblah (the direction Muslims face during prayer) and the third holiest site in Islam, asserting that it would resist all attempts aimed at altering its historical significance or character.

Al-Azhar also called on Islamic governments to take a firmer stance against such incendiary comments made by Israeli officials, labeling them as irresponsible and indicative of a broader trend of inciting violence against Palestinians.

The institution urged for an end to what it called the “criminal statements and terrorist practices” by Israeli officials, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict and violence in the region.

Ben Gvir’s controversial remarks have drawn significant criticism, and he has previously expressed a desire to assert Israeli sovereignty over the Al-Aqsa site, which is a flashpoint in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Al-Azhar’s statement reflects broader concerns over the escalation of tensions and violence, particularly regarding actions in Gaza and the broader implications for peace and stability in the region.
