Egypt Daily News – Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Monday that Hamas is acquiring weapons from Egypt via the Philadelphi Route, which runs along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
Netanyahu said that while efforts are underway to secure the return of captives, maintaining control over the Philadelphi Route is crucial for Israel’s security and to prevent Hamas from gaining an advantage.
He emphasized that Israel has effectively blocked supplies from its side but that Hamas has managed to arm itself through connections with Egypt.
Netanyahu cautioned against the idea of withdrawing from the Philadelphi Corridor, warning that such a move could lead to a long-term presence by Hamas.
The Israeli government remains committed to its military presence in the area, which has become a significant sticking point in ongoing ceasefire talks.
Conversely, sources from Egypt have expressed opposition to any Israeli presence at key points such as the Rafah crossing and the Philadelphi Route, highlighting the tension surrounding this strategic region.
The Philadelphi Route, approximately 14 kilometers long, has been a focal area for both military operations and diplomatic negotiations between the involved parties.
