Egypt Daily News – Major Ismail Kamal, the Governor of Aswan, addressed concerns regarding a recent uptick in gastrointestinal infections in the region.
He noted that investigation teams from the Ministry of Health found that in households with multiple members, typically only one to four individuals were experiencing symptoms, indicating that the situation is not epidemic.
During his statements on the program “Salah Al-Tahrir,” broadcast on Sada El Balad channel, the governor explained that samples had been collected from infected individuals as well as from their homes.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Housing inspected 103 drinking water stations across the governorate and assessed the filters and chlorine levels. Results from these tests confirmed that the water supply was safe and met all health specifications.
The governor refuted rumors of cholera cases, calling them unfounded and emphasizing that all reported patients were undergoing necessary medical assessments.
He stated that, up to that point, no cholera cases had been confirmed, and all symptoms presented were typical of common gastrointestinal infections.
The gastroenteritis cases were primarily reported in the areas of Abu Rish and Daraw, leading to several patients being admitted to local hospitals for treatment.
As of the latest updates, a total of 128 people had been hospitalized, with 22 individuals discharged after treatment and a small number remaining in intensive care due to severe dehydration.
Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Health, indicated that a final report on the situation would be released within 48 hours, noting that the majority of cases appeared to stem from possible food or drink contamination.
