Egypt Daily News – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty warned on Sunday that the escalating mutual shelling between Israel and Hezbollah threatens to ignite a comprehensive regional war, emphasizing that the escalation negatively impacts the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.

The minister stated in a statement to AFP: “There is deep concern about the possibility of what Egypt has warned of, the potential for a comprehensive escalation in the region leading to a full-scale regional war.”

Abdel Aati pointed out that the recent escalation “negatively affects” the negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, in which Egypt plays a mediating role.

Tensions have escalated in recent days with dozens of deaths and thousands of injuries reported on Tuesday and Wednesday in Lebanon, due to the explosion of communication devices used by Hezbollah, which has been attributed to Israel.

Israeli authorities have pledged to restore calm in northern Israel so that tens of thousands of displaced people fleeing the fighting can return to their homes.

Israel announced a shift in focus towards Hezbollah, about a year after the start of cross-border exchanges of fire that coincided with the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip on October 7, following an unprecedented attack on Israel by the Palestinian group Hamas.
